These Pumps are a common failure on these models and usually fail due to excessive Camshaft wear (the metal shards find their way into the pump causing loss of braking pressure as the primary symptom). Eventually the car will show an error code "P258B - Vacuum Pump Circuit/Range Performance". Replacing the Vacuum Pump should fix this error code. If you are experiencing this, it is likely that your exhaust camshaft is worn and will require replacement.

It may also be worth checking the Sump strainer as the metal shards can block this.
